I'm worried what modern cinema would do to something as awesome as Akira, but that was pretty damn sick for a fan made trailer.

I know what you mean. But I think the technology has finally caught up to our imagination. I don't know if this temporary but movie producers are taking fan-boy crazed licenses like this more seriously... But I know what you mean... I remember Godzilla with Mathew Broederick.

Man. For me it's the new Star Trek movies.
They are PERFECT examples of modern cinema and coopting of existing franchises. They would take Akira and make it an AWESOME FLASHY WHIZBANG MOVIE, but gone would be any of the complex themes or the speculative nature of the film.

I kinda feel that way about Enders Game, which is why I still haven't seen it :-\
I do like the idea that with technology what it is today & the right marketing to a community these guys could actually get this made with a Kickstarter & bypass any of the big studio bloat
